Flaws in the judgment By Asma Jahangir

The Supreme Court (SC) has spoken and the nation must bow its head. The chief justice has asked members of the bar to pray for the judiciary. This too must be respected, as the Almighty alone can rescue those who wish to destroy themselves.
There is open friction between the ruling party and the court. By not restoring the SC judges earlier and letting Justice Dogar run amok with the law, the government lost face.
On the other hand, after a historical struggle for establishing the rule of law, the judiciary was expected to be above reproach in a political atmosphere of nepotism and incompetence. Woefully, that was not to be.....

SC to start contempt case proceedings against Malik

KARACHI, Jan 25: The lives of thousands of passengers are at stake owing to a major security flaw at the country’s busiest airport, technical experts have warned.

The Airport Security Force is continuing to use a bomb detector at the Jinnah International Airport despite the fact that British government and scientists have declared the device “not suitable for bomb detection”.

The device known as ADE-651 has been manufactured by a British company ATSC (UK) and has been exported to over 20 countries, including Pakistan......

Detailed judgment on contempt notices released

ISLAMABAD, Jan 25: The Supreme Court released on Monday its detailed judgment on review petitions filed by superior court judges to whom contempt notices had been issued in consequence of the July 31 verdict.
“Had our superior judiciary followed the path of non-PCO judges, the course of Pakistan’s political and judicial history would have been different,” the verdict authored by Justice Javed Iqbal observed.
“In fact the (July 31, 2009) judgment has been considered in the country as well as on global level as a triumph of democratic principles and a stinging negation of the dictatorship,” it said......

JI asks PM Gilani to implement SC verdict on NRO

LAHORE, Jan. 22: Jamaat e Islami deputy chief Ch. Muhammad Aslam Saleemi has stressed upon Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to fulfill his promise of initiating legal action against all those taking unlawful benefit under the NRO that had been struck down by the Supreme Court. Addressing the Friday congregation at Mansoora mosque, he said, after the SC short judgment, the Prime Minister had assured the nation and the media that the government would implement the court decision soon after its detailed judgment was issued. He said the detailed judgment had been released four days ago, therefore the Prime Minister should begin the implementation process by reopening the cases concerning billions of dollars lying in the Swiss banks. The JI deputy chief condemned the threatening statement of US Defence Secretary Robert Gates from India and warned that the US effort to build India as the regional policeman would disturb the balance of power in the area. He urged the Pakistani rulers to review their policies and build a power bloc in the area with the help of China and Iran for an effective check of the US and India’s designs. He stressed upon the patriotic masses and the political parties to join hands for foiling all enemy plans against Islam and this country. Ch. Aslam Saleemi said that the Pakistani daughter Dr Aafia Siddiqui was looking for a Muhammad Bin Qasim from behind the bars of a US jail but the Pakistani rulers were still handing over innocent citizens to the US and secret agencies in return for dollars. He said that during the current month, there had been eleven drone attacks in different areas in which dozens of innocent Pakistanis had been martyred. He called for immediate stoppage of the drone attacks or shooting down the drones.

Current military operation in Baluchistan also destined to fail.

LAHORE, Jan.22:
The Jamaat e Islami chief Syed Munawar Hasan has said that the 5th military operation going on Baluchistan would also fail like the previous four and the solution lay only in evolving national consensus and a national agenda.
He was addressing a national seminar on “ Baluchistan crisis, its cause, effects and solution” at Idara e Noor e Haq, Karachi on Wednesday, says a JIP press release here.
Prominent JUI leader Hafiz Husain Ahmed, acting chief of Baluchistan National Party Dr Jehannzeb Khan, and JI chiefs from Sindh and Baluchistan besides representatives of different political parties , prominent Baluch leaders , educationists, and columnists from national dailies also spoke on the occasion.
Syed Munawar Hasan said the Baluchistan issue was not the issue of a province only, it was an issue of the whole nation and the country and should be resolved as such. He said that there had been extra judicial killings, large scale abductions of the Baluchis and murders of young Baluch women and children.
He said as the Baluch leadership had rejected the Baluchistan package, the JI also rejected it. He called for ending the military operation as it was deepening hatred.
The JI chief said that in the 18th of February elections, the masses had voted for an end to the dictator’s rule with the hope that a new democratic culture would flourish in the country. But unfortunately, the thing had not changed at all.
He said that in the world history, problems had never been resolved through military operations. Nelson Mandela, Yasser Arafat and the Irish Republic Army were once condemned as terrorists but subsequently, the other side had to talk to them for a solution.
He noted that the MQM chief Altaf Husain had supported the operation in Swat but not in Karachi.

People to vote against pro-US policies: Baloch

Rawalpindi:

The residents of NA-55 will vote for Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) in the by-election on February 24 to reject pro-America policies and anti-people actions of provincial and federal governments.

JI central secretary general Liaquat Baloch stated this while addressing a ceremony held to inaugurate main election office of JI candidate from NA-55 Dr Muhammad Kamal here on Tuesday.

Baloch said the whole nation is eying on by-elections in Rawalpindi. He said the rulers in Islamabad and Lahore had disappointed the people and gave no relief to them. “Our people are well aware of facts and they cannot be misguided,” he said.

He said that due to wrong policies of the federal government and friendly opposition, the vital institutions of the country are heading towards confrontation and direct clash.

The ceremony was also addressed Maulana Abdul Mateen of JUI-F, Mian Muhammad Aslam, Hanif Chaudhry, Dabir Ahmed Khan and others. Sheikh Zahid, Muhammad Yamin Seithi, Sheikh Junaid and others announced their support to Dr Kamal.

Thousands protest against Dr. Aafia’s false trial, demand her release.

2010-01-20:
LAHORE, Jan. 20: Rallies and demonstrations protesting against the false and baseless trial of Dr Aafia Siddiqui before a US court were held Tuesday evening all over the country on an appeal by the Jamaat e Islami chief Syed Munawar Hasan. The protesters condemned the prolonged detention of Dr Aafia Siddiqui and the inhuman treatment being given to her by the super power and called for her immediate release. • In the Punjab capital, large number of people including the workers of the JI and the Shabab e Milli staged a rally near the Masjid e Shuhada. on the Mall. JI secretary general Liaquat Baloch led the rally. In Islamabad, the protest was organised at the Islamabad Press Club. The demonstrators raised slogans against all those siding with the US at this critical juncture. • Addressing the Lahore rally, Liaquat Baloch termed the US as the international terrorist and champion of human indignity. The whole world, he said, was facing terrorism only because of the US. He said the US had been detaining a helpless Pakistani lady who was a Hafiza of the Holy Quran for the last six years. She was subjected to most inhuman treatment and tortured in most brutal ways. But the Pakistani rulers did not have the courage even to demand her release. • “What could be more insulting than the US special envoy rebuking Pakistani parliamentarians in their face and no body taking notice of that”, he added. • He said the PPP had been in power for two years by now. Long time ago, the Parliament unanimously adopted a resolution against drone attacks and demanded an end to these. But instead of implementing that resolution, the government allowed a free hand to the US for drone attacks. • Liaquat Baloch said that Dr. Aafia was a symbol of honour and dignity of the Islamic world .She was innocent but ex general Pervez Musharraf sold her away to the US in return for dollars and the present rulers were continuing his policy. He said nothing good in this regard could be expected from the present rulers. However, the citizens of the country would continue their efforts for the release of their respected sister. • Speaking on the occasion, Dr Farid Piracha said the US was punishing this country merely because of its nuclear programme. He deplored that the women organizations and NGOs were silent on Dr Aafia’s issue.

JI chief appeals for protest tomorrow in support of Dr Aafia.

2010-01-19:
LAHORE, Jan. 18: The Jamaat e Islami chief Syed Munawar Hasan has appealed to the nation to hold protest demonstrations and torch bearing rallies tomorrow, January 19, to express their solidarity with Dr Aafia Siddiqui as she faces her trial before a US court in totally baseless and concocted cases. The JI chief directed JI deputy secretary general Dr Farid Ahmed Piracha to coordinate such rallies with the support of the party at federal and provincial levels and in major cities. According to a Mansoora press release on Monday, Syed Munawar Hasan said that it was the moral duty of the Pakistani nation to come on roads for the sake of Dr Aafia Siddiqui, a Haafiza of the Holy Quran as she faced trial. He said all political and religious parties both in the government and the opposition should prepare themselves for an answer before Allah Al-Mighty on the doomsday about the part they played when a daughter of the nation was being disgraced in an American court. It is important that the renowned British journalist and newly convert to Islam, Ynonne Ridley, Dr Aafia’s sister Dr Fauzia Siddiqui and Begum Amna Masud Janjua, head of the Missing Pakistanis organization, have also appealed for protest demonstration on Tuesday evening.

JI chief calls for end to military operation.

2010-01-18:

LAHORE, Jan. 17: The Jamaat e Islami chief Syed Munawar Hasan has called for immediate end to the military operation in Baluchistan and for booking Pervez Msharraf in Akbar Bugti’s murder case to cool down the Baluchistan people. Addressing a “ Save Baluchistan Conference” organized by the JI at Hub on Sunday, he also demanded registration of an FIR in regard to the Turbat martyrs to the satisfaction of the bereaved families and recovery of the missing Baluchis, says a JI press release issued from Mansoora. Syed Munawar Hsasan said that the US involvement in the country was increasing with every passing day only because of the cowardice of our rulers. In the February elections, he said, the masses had voted for a change but the Zardari government was still continuing Musharraf;s policies while the PML(N), the ANP, the MQM and the JUI were fully with the government in its pro-US policies. He said the PPP government would be helpless without their support. He said that Mian Nawaz Sharif was opposing the government only from Model Town and if he really opposed the government policies, he should come on The Mall. He deplored that even the armed forces were second to none in supporting the US policies. He said that military operation was no solution as it only created hatred. He said that the US, India, Israel and other enemies of Islam had their greedy eyes on the rich resources of Baluchistan and were hatching conspiracies every day. The Baluch people, he said had always supported Pakistan but the government was pushing them to the wall. The JI Baluchistan chief Abdul Mateen Akhundzada also addressed the occasion.

Zardari to attend to people’s problems instead of holding Darbars. JI Chielf

2010-01-16:

LAHORE, Jan. 15: The Jamaat e Islami chief Syed Munawar Hasan has counseled President Asif Ali Zardari to pay attention to the problems of the masses, good governance and elimination of corruption instead of holding Awami Darbars. Addressing the Friday congregation at Mansoora mosque, he said the life of the common man had become miserable because of price hike, load shedding and sugar and atta crisis while the rulers were busy in loot and plunder, nepotism and building their bank balances. He said the masses had voted the present government with high hopes and for reversing Pervez Musharraf’s policies and solving their socio-economic problems but the two years rule of the PPP had disappointed them. He said after the Supreme Court verdict on the NRO, President Zardari seemed to be in trouble and the government managed vote of confidence from three provincial assemblies. But as vote of trust could not be secured from the Punjab Assembly, the President had thought of holding Awami Darbars. He said such tactics could not add to the popularity of the President nor could it be any service to democracy. In order to complete its term, the government should establish the supremacy of the constitution and the parliament and solve problems of the masses on priority basis. Syed Munawar Hasan stressed upon the government to approach the International Court of Justice in Dr A’fia s case. He said Dr A’fia had expressed no-confidence in the American judiciary as she did not expect justice from it. The US judicial system had been fully exposed with the inhuman and tyrannical treatment given to the Pakistani lady, he said.

JI demands practical steps for rehabilitation of arson-hit traders

KARACHI, Jan 13, 2010

The same elements are involved in the bomb blast at Ashura procession M A Jinnah Road, and arson of Bolton Market. The government should take action against them, besides take practical steps for the rehabilitation of these devastated traders. This was stated by Amir Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi Muhammad Hussain Mehanti while meeting with a delegation of Jamiat Punjabi Sodagaran at their office here on Monday.

Government itself to blame for unrest among public, Syed Munawar Hasan

LAHORE, Jan. 13: The Jamaat e Islami chief Syed Munawar Hasan, has said that the public mandate in the February elections had been for the reversal of Pervez Musharraf’s policies and the government by blindly continuing Musharraf policies and ignoring the problems of the masses was itself causing disappointment among the people.
He was commenting on Prime Minister Gilani’s remarks that the government had been elected for a five year term but certain quarters were causing distress among the people.
Addressing the 5 day central workshop of JI workers at Mansoora on Wednesday, he said instead of reversing the Musharraf’s policies, the PPP government had gone further ahead in the US slavery, in the loot and plunder of the public money and was paying little attention to the problems of the masses including price hike and unemployment. Therefore, the government itself was to blame for the unrest among the masses and should not blame others for that, he said.
The JI chief said the country was passing through crises one after the other. A number of mafias had cropped up and the crisis of sugar, power, gas and atta were getting acute. When the people came on roads against load-shedding and price spiral, they were lathi charged. Loot of public funds was touching new heights. The Pakistan Steel Mills that had been a profiteering concern, was showing a loss of 22 billion. The people all over the country felt insecure. Fraud, murders and dacoities were rampant and the criminals did not have any fear of law. The country’s frontiers were being violated every day by US drones which were killing peaceful citizens.
Continuing, he said, Dr. A’fia Siddiqui, a respected daughter of the nation, was being inhumanly treated by the Americans due to the criminal negligence of the rulers. He said that the Pakistan government was not approaching the International Court of Justice in hr case simply because this would annoy Washington. He said, during the case hearing on January 11, Dr A’fia had expressed no confidence in the US courts as she did not expect justice from them. The US judicial system had been fully exposed and the US attitude in Dr A’fia case clearly reflected the inhuman and anti Muslim approach of the US.
